Food for Thought

Q: Out of these three food related incidents that happened today, which is the most weird?
  1. Finding a soft serve ice cream sitting intact on the sidewalk?
  2. That there is no decaf coffee to be found in all of downtown Reykjavik?
  3. Almost stepping on a half eaten pickled herring in the middle of the town square?

A: Obviously finding an ice cream intact wins; in order for it to be in pristine condition it would have to be below freezing.

Not only is it below freezing, but it is windy - even by Icelandic standards. What kind of a person buys an ice cream when all you have to do to get that special eyeball headache is to go outside and open your mouth?

Ok, so there is no decaf - Icelanders don't believe in things like "decaf" and "non-alcoholic" (although the latter one they probably should believe in as we are genetically predisposed to being drunk and disorderly). They do, however, believe in "diet" and "light" and "low-carb" since vanity is a virtue here.

As for the half eaten pickled herring, I can't explain that one. That is just queer in a Monty Python sense of the word.

Maybe someone bought the ice cream to warm up. After all, the ice cream is probably at about 28 degrees F. I assume that the air temperature is much lower than this? This would make the ice cream much warmer in comparison.

As for decaf coffee, what's the point? Isn't coffee simply a caffine delivery method? Makes decaf kind of pointless.

I also cannot fathom the pickled herring.

Good point on the ice cream.

As far as the decaf: this is my perpetual problem with "drugs", i like them for the taste not the effect (except the morning cup). The same goes for tobacco, I actually like the taste of cigarettes, but obviously not the long term effect, actually not even the instant effect, so I don't smoke. But I really enjoy a good cigarette every now and then.

Pickled herring, still a mystery.
